Tata’s electric spin-offs: Tigor EV or Nexon EV, which one to choose

Following a similar product line strategy as the Nexon EV, the Tigor EV was launched on Tuesday in three trims - XE, XM and XZ+ between Rs 11.99 lakh and Rs 12. 99 lakh (ex-showroom). NEW DELHI: Knowing Tigor EV and Nexon EV are based on two different body types, don’t write off the headline just yet. These two Tata products are operating in the ‘affordable’ segment of the electric domain and will grow strength to strength in terms of driving electrification in the mass market.

Various states offer significant subsidies and tax benefits for the promotion of EVs, thereby reducing the effective on-road price. The company has also been able to achieve a similar claimed range in both cars.
Tata Motors has used its versatile and scalable Ziptron electric module under both cars. The IP67-rated 26 kWh battery size in Tigor EV is smaller than Nexon EV’s 30.2 kWh but delivers a comparable range of 306 kilometers/single change against SUV’s 312 kilometers/charge. In real-life situations, according to customers, the Nexon EV delivers between 225-260 kilometres/single.

Both the cars take similar time in 0-80% charge using a CCS 2 fast-charger or 15-ampere plug. A 0-80% quick top-up takes 60 minutes and 65 minutes in Nexon EV and Tigor EV respectively while the company claims 8.5 hours through AC callbox charger. Tata Motors is offering an 8-year and 160,000 km on battery and motor warranty of both Nexon EV and Tigor EV.

Tigor EV delivers a peak power output of 74 PS and a peak torque of 170 Nm while Nexon EV belts out 129 PS and 245 Nm. Automatic transmission is available in both cars. A 0-60 kph sprint in Tigor EV is claimed in 5.7 seconds while Nexon EV is quicker by over a second to clock the same.
Connected suite, powered by Tata’s iRA unlocks a similar set of features. Tata claims 35 connected car features in Nexon EV through ZConnect app while Tigor EV gets 30+. Connected car features include remote commands and diagnostics, remote commands, vehicle health monitoring, safety and security, driving and trip analytics, and location-based services.
Tata Nexon EV is available under the subscription module in select cities, starting at Rs 29,999/ month. This may be extended to Tigor EV in the future as well. Nexon EV has passed crash test safety with a 5-star while Tigor EV ticked off the same with a 4-star.

Both the offerings pamper customers with a 7-inch display (different layouts), Harman stereo system, LED lights, rear parking camera auto-foldable ORVMs. Nexon EV is more premium, thanks to the optional sunroof, alloys wheels and leatherette interiors.

Tata Motors brings in Tigor EV at a time when Nexon EV is recording all-time high sales since launch. While both the products are aimed to drive the electrification journey for the carmaker, the lower price point of Tigor EV may turn out to be a boon.
